Thousands without power in Western North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Severe thunderstorms moving through Western North Carolina early Monday left thousands of residents without power across the region, according to utility officials.

Haywood Electric Membership Corporation said that as of 7:30 a.m. about 1,800 members were experiencing outages across its service area.

The utility said crews were working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible while storms continued to move through the region.

According to the outage map from Duke Energy, about 5,350 customers in the Carolinas were without electricity at 8 a.m. Monday. Of those, 3,918 outages were reported in North Carolina and 1,432 in South Carolina.

In Western North Carolina, the largest number of outages was reported in Buncombe County with 1,195 customers without power. Other counties reporting outages included:

  • Henderson County: 814
  • Macon County: 457
  • Jackson County: 299
  • Transylvania County: 272
  • Haywood County: 211
  • Avery County: 136
  • Swain County: 100

Utilities encouraged customers to check outage maps online for real-time updates as crews worked to restore service.

Severe weather moved across the mountains early Monday as part of a broader storm system affecting the Southeast.
