WEAVERVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Weaverville police are investigating a theft and vehicle pursuit that began Sunday afternoon at a Walmart and ended with the suspect fleeing on foot after a crash, authorities said.

Officers were called around 1:48 p.m. May 24 to the Walmart at 25 Northridge Commons Parkway for a reported crime in progress, according to the Weaverville Police Department.

Police said the suspect left the scene in a stolen vehicle, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit toward Asheville. During the chase, the suspect crashed the vehicle and then ran into a nearby neighborhood. He was not located, and the search was suspended.

In a statement Sunday, Weaverville Police Chief Oberlin said officers responded “quickly to a rapidly evolving situation” and the department remains committed to a full investigation. The department also thanked assisting agencies for their help during the response.

The investigation is still active, and officials said no additional details are being released at this time.

On Tuesday morning, police said in a phone call that there were no new updates in the case and that it remains under investigation. The spokesperson also said the department did not immediately have information on which neighborhood the suspect fled into.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Weaverville Police Department.
