ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Western North Carolina residents affected by Tropical Storm Helene or facing rising living costs can now schedule free tax appointments with Pisgah Legal Services, which could help eligible taxpayers access thousands of dollars in refunds and credits.

Appointments begin Feb. 2, 2026, and are available by calling 828-210-3404. The program serves individuals and families in Pisgah Legal’s 18-county service area who earn less than $67,000 per year. Services are offered in person, virtually or via drop-off, with advocates available in Spanish and translation services for other languages.

New tax rules this year could provide additional relief. Taxpayers affected by Helene may qualify for the Qualified Disaster Loss Deduction and other disaster-related benefits, which can reduce tax bills or increase refunds. Workers who receive qualified tip income may also deduct up to $25,000 for tax years 2025-2028, regardless of filing status.

“After Hurricane Helene and everything else that our neighbors have faced this year, taxes may be at the bottom of their list of things to worry about,” said Mike McDonald, managing director at Pisgah Legal Services. “However, we don’t want anyone to miss out on additional money that could make a real difference. Every dollar counts.”

Last year, Pisgah Legal helped 1,659 people file taxes and secured $1.37 million in refunds. McDonald said certified tax preparers work to ensure clients receive all the credits they’re entitled to.

Even individuals who don’t normally file taxes are encouraged to make an appointment, as unclaimed tax credits could provide significant financial support.
