ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a severe thunderstorm warning Monday morning for parts of Buncombe County, including the Asheville area, as a line of storms moved through Western North Carolina.

The warning, issued shortly after 7 a.m., includes southeastern Buncombe County and nearby communities and remains in effect until 8 a.m., according to the weather service.

Forecasters said the storms were located along a line stretching from about 13 miles north of Brevard to 15 miles northwest of Pickens and were moving east at about 40 mph.

Radar indicated the storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, which could down trees and power lines, the weather service said.

Communities in the warning area include Arden and Fairview in Buncombe County, as well as Hendersonville, Fletcher and Mills River in neighboring Henderson County.

Forecasters urge residents to move indoors and stay away from windows while the storms pass.
