CEDAR MOUNTAIN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — After a mostly dry Saturday, Winter Storm Fern crept in overnight, coating Western North Carolina with ice and knocking out power for over many toward the North Carolina-South Carolina state line.

According to the Duke Energy outage map, power outages this morning are centered around the Bent Creek neighborhood of Asheville, with 163 customers without power as of 6:41 a.m., the Franklin area, with 339 outages, Waynesville, with 424 outages and Brevard, with 286.

However, by far the most outages this morning were reported in Cedar Mountain. According to the Duke map, 952 customers have gone dark since 5:23 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 25.

In each case, Duke has cited “Storm Damage” as the outage cause, and stated that crews are “waiting for conditions to improve” before providing updates on a timeline for restoration.
