ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The G20 Finance Track meetings will be held in Asheville this weekend. Despite the massive influx of high-profile visitors, no street closures are planned, though Omni Grove Park Inn security will be increased, Asheville police said.

The G20 summit is a gathering of finance ministers, central bank governors and other international economic officials from 19 sovereign countries, the European Union and the African Union, intended to “advance discussions on global economic priorities,” according to the United States Department of the Treasury.

Around 500 international delegates are expected to attend.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent will host the meetings from Saturday, Aug. 29 to Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, at the Grove Park Inn, 290 Macon Ave., Asheville, N.C.

G20 schedule

The schedule for the G20 meetings will be broken into two halves.

The first, to be held from Saturday, Aug. 29 to Sunday, Aug. 30, will feature the G20 finance and central bank deputies meeting.

The second, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 31 to Tuesday, Sept. 1, will center around the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting.

Bessent said that the selection of Asheville as the G20 host city is meant to underline the revitalization of the region after Tropical Storm Helene devastated the area in September 2024.

“I am proud to spotlight that the United States will host the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina. The selection of historic Asheville reflects the Trump Administration’s commitment to the revitalization and resilience of western North Carolina, which continues to rebuild after the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene,” Bessent said, according to the G20 Research Group.

How will the G20 Finance Track meetings impact area traffic?

Rick Rice, Asheville Police Department public information officer, said that local police will work alongside federal organizations to secure the summit.

“APD’s role in relation to the G20 Finance Track meeting is working alongside several local law enforcement and emergency management agencies to support our Federal partners and ensure the safety and security of the summit,” Rice said.

Despite an increase in security efforts around the Grove Park Inn area, no street closures are anticipated, Rice said after an 828newsNOW inquiry about traffic expectations.

“While there are no planned hard closures on public streets, access checkpoints will be operational at the resort property boundaries,” Rice said.
