ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville is stepping up its pickleball game. There are now two wheel-based pickleball nets at Weaver Park.

The nets are part of a pilot program to test the impacts of a new system on court surfaces. The pilot program will run through September. If the nets function well for play and have no negative impacts on court surfaces, the Asheville Parks and Recreation athletics team plans to replace older wheel-based nets with lighter versions.

In 2023, Asheville Parks and Recreation dual-lined all public tennis courts to include pickleball lines, and rollaway pickleball nets were made available at select courts. Unfortunately, the weight of the championship quality nets has caused surface damage to courts, the city’s website said.

There was damage at Malvern Hills and Murphy-Oakley parks, where courts had been recently resurfaced for around $47,000.
