ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Nemesis Theatre Company, a local troupe known for creative Shakespeare adaptations, has announced their first show to be produced under a new contemporary works banner, ArchNemesis. “Natural Shocks,” a one-woman show by Lauren Gunderson, will be performed next month in downtown Asheville.

According to the Nemesis website, ArchNemesis is guided by the following principles:

  • The work must be purposeful, vital and bold.
  • The audience deserves respect.
  • Theatre should be theatrical.
  • Theatre is serious play.

Those principles are each invoked in the show description of “Natural Shocks”:

“‘Natural Shocks’ follows statistics-obsessed insurance agent Angela as she races into her basement to escape an oncoming storm. Trapped below ground, she confronts the events and relationships of her life — the heartbreaking, the hair-raising, and the hilarious — in a narrative that hurtles from pound cake to Disney World to Best Buy to Hamlet to her bold plan for a beautiful future. Resilient, funny, optimistic, dishonest and not sorry for herself, Angela cracks wise, lies and eventually lets the audience in on the biggest secret of all — the truth — as she waits for the storm to break.”

“Natural Shocks” is directed by Melon Wedick and stars Trinity Smith Keel as Angela. Additional credits include stage manager and costume designer Christine Caldemeyer, lighting design by Jason Williams, live sound design by Franklin Keel and set design by Wedick.

The show will run Thursdays through Saturdays, April 2-12, at the BeBe Theatre, 20 Commerce St., Asheville. Tickets are $30 general admission and $15 on Thursdays. Find yours at www.nemesistheatre.com/product/natural-shocks-ticket.
