MORGANTON, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Over 50 miles of Burke County and Rutherford County will soon be resurfaced after over $10 million in contracts were awarded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

What you should know about Burke County road resurfacing

In Burke County, a $4.7 million contract was awarded to Maymead Inc. for resurfacing 22 miles of secondary roads. Construction work, including milling, resurfacing and shoulder reconstruction, began June 29, 2026, on 24 sections of roadway.

The project is expected to conclude on Nov. 12, 2027.

“Secondary roads are chosen for resurfacing projects to improve maintenance efficiency based on pavement conditions, location and proximity to other routes under construction,” the NCDOT wrote in a press release. “Drivers will notice benefits including improved driving surfaces and higher visibility road markings once construction is complete. New materials will allow for greater durability and longevity of roads.”

What you should know about Rutherford County road resurfacing

In Rutherford County, meanwhile, Tarheel Paving and Asphalt Co. was awarded a $5.9 million contract from the NCDOT. The contractor will be responsible for restoring 31 miles of Rutherford County roadway, including 17 sections of secondary roads, three school bus drives and one fire department.

Tarheel Paving was permitted to begin work on June 29, 2026.

Several schools that will benefit from the project include Rutherfordton Elementary School, R-S Middle School and R-S Central High School.

“Resurfacing in summer months allows the contractor to avoid impacting school traffic,” the NCDOT wrote in a release.
