ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — North Carolina health officials are spreading the word about two ongoing public health efforts this summer: mental health crisis support through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and resources to help people quit tobacco and nicotine products.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is promoting awareness campaigns during June, which is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and July, recognized as Multicultural Mental Health Awareness Month.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone experiencing emotional distress, a mental health crisis or thoughts of suicide.

According to NCDHHS, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 34. Officials also note that men are often less likely to seek help for mental health concerns, making awareness efforts especially important during June.

Spanish-speaking residents can access support through a dedicated 24/7 Spanish-language service by calling 988 and selecting option 2 or by texting “AYUDA” to 988. Additional information is available through the state’s 988 Línea de Vida program.

Health officials are also continuing efforts to reduce tobacco and nicotine use across North Carolina.

The department’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch is encouraging residents who use cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or nicotine pouches to seek help if they want to quit.

Officials say many tobacco users make multiple attempts before successfully quitting and warn that switching from one nicotine product to another can increase dependence and contribute to long-term health risks.

North Carolina residents can receive free cessation support by calling 1-855-QUIT-NOW (1-855-335-3569) or visiting QuitlineNC.com. Eligible participants may also qualify for free nicotine replacement products, including patches and gum.

State health leaders say both programs are aimed at connecting North Carolinians with resources that can improve health outcomes and save lives.
