ASHEVILLE (828NewsNow.com) — Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper is heading to Washington, D.C.

Cooper will replace outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis, who was first elected to office in 2014.

Cooper had 58.72% of the state votes (2,467,963), compared to Republican Michael Whatley, who had 39.09% (1,643,088 votes). Cooper’s win gives Democrats a key victory as they try to gain at least four seats currently held by Republicans.
