Man wanted in shooting death arrested in Jacksonville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A man wanted in the shooting death of an Asheville woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon in the eastern part of the state, Asheville police said.

Darren Lamon Clayton, 34, was taken into custody by local law enforcement officers about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Jacksonville, according to a news release from the Asheville Police Department.

Asheville officers making a welfare check in the 100 block of South French Broad Avenue around 11 a.m. Saturday found Makayla Lashea Harrison, 26, dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound, Asheville police said in a news release.

“The Asheville Police Department would like to thank the Jacksonville Police Department, New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Onslow County Sheriff’s Office for their fast response and invaluable work in apprehending this dangerous individual,” Asheville police said in Thursday’s news release.
