HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Hendersonville will begin to offer mulch for free to the community at the end of this month. Participants do not have to be Hendersonville residents to receive mulch.

The Hendersonville Public Works Department program will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, at the old Wastewater Treatment Plant, 80 Balfour Road, Hendersonville, N.C. The program will continue until the mulch has been depleted.

A Public Works Department staff member will administer the mulch with a backhoe. Commercial vehicles, including dump trucks and other marked commercial trucks and trailers, will not be permitted.

The mulch giveaway marks the first such program in Hendersonville since Tropical Storm Helene hit Western North Carolina in September 2024.

“During the storm recovery effort, the vegetative debris that would typically be processed for the program was removed as part of the City’s cleanup operations,” the city explained. “Under normal circumstances, vegetative materials are ground into mulch and properly aged for at least one year before being made available to the community. The return of the program provides an opportunity for the City to once again put these materials to beneficial use while offering a resource to local residents.”

As a “thank-you” to the WNC community for its patience after Helene, there are no residency restrictions for the 2026 mulch giveaway. Usually, the first two weeks of the giveaway are reserved for Hendersonville residents.

For questions about the program, contact the Hendersonville Public Works Department at (828) 697-3084.
