FAIRVIEW, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Nearly a year after Tropical Storm Helene wreaked havoc on Western North Carolina, the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department is on track to finish a much-anticipated construction and remodeling project at its main station in Buncombe County.

The department started the renovation and addition project in June 2024, marking its first significant update since 1997. However, progress was interrupted when Helene hit in September 2024, causing flooding that damaged the building and forced firefighters to evacuate.

Since then, firefighters have been living in donated campers situated behind the station, facing harsh winter conditions and summer heat without air conditioning in the apparatus bays, Chief Scott Jones said in a social media post.

“This past 11 months, they have faced things that would have destroyed most organizations,” Jones said. “They come in and work their shifts and roll with whatever gets thrown their way during the shift. They have truly went above and beyond in keeping this department moving forward.”

Helene not only delayed construction but also claimed the life of Battalion Chief Tony Garrison, who died in the line of duty while rescuing victims. Additionally, in February 2025, Battalion Chief Steven Lytle lost his life in an off-duty tractor accident.

Contractors now anticipate that the project will be completed by late September. Following the renovation, the department plans to host an open house and grand reopening for the community.

The Fairview Fire Department’s support group is also planning a fundraiser to acquire essential equipment and furnishings for the updated facility.
