ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Wet and unsettled weather is expected to continue through the weekend across Western North Carolina, bringing cooler-than-normal temperatures, daily chances of showers and thunderstorms and the risk of isolated flash flooding, forecasters said Friday.
The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg said slow-moving storms could produce heavy rainfall through Friday night and Saturday, especially over the mountains and foothills. The heaviest rain could trigger localized flooding in low-lying areas and near streams.
Cloud cover will keep daytime highs a few degrees below average through the weekend, forecasters said. Conditions are expected to briefly warm Monday ahead of a passing cold front before drier, cooler weather settles in for much of next week.
Rainfall totals remain above average this summer. Since June 1, the Asheville area has recorded 17.44 inches of rain, more than 4 inches above normal. Year-to-date precipitation has reached 35.51 inches, nearly 3 inches higher than average.
