ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Asheville is looking for volunteers to help with its annual bike and pedestrian data collection the week after Labor Day.
The information collected supports the city’s GAP Plan, helps identify trends in multimodal activity, and is used to guide safety improvement projects.
Volunteers can participate in two ways: the bike and pedestrian count or the greenway user survey.
Bike and pedestrian count
Volunteers will tally non-motorized street users at designated locations on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Sept. 9
- Wednesday, Sept. 10
- Thursday, Sept. 11
- Saturday, Sept. 13 (morning only)
Weekday counts are scheduled from 5-7 p.m., with some locations available from 7-9 a.m. Saturday counts run from 9-11 a.m. No prior experience or special skills are required.
Greenway user surveys
The city is also seeking volunteers to conduct surveys on the Wilma Dykeman and Reed Creek Greenways to gather information on user behavior and the economic impact of the greenways. Surveys will take place:
- 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9*
- 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9*
- 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13
- 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13
*If it rains on Tuesday, surveys will move to Thursday, Sept. 11.
How to volunteer
Interested people may sign up online via the registration link or by texting 2025count to 73224. Staff will try to accommodate location preferences but ask for flexibility. There is no set deadline to sign up, though sites are expected to be assigned by early September. Volunteers will receive a confirmation email with next steps.
