ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is inviting families from across Buncombe County to Pack Square Park next week for its annual United for Youth Block Party, while making a last-minute push to recruit about 50 additional volunteers to help make the free event possible.
The community celebration is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Pack Square Park, 80 Court Plaza. A rain date is set for Thursday, Aug. 13.
Organizers say the event is designed to bring together youths, families, neighbors and community organizations to celebrate the community’s strengths and connect families with local resources.
The block party will feature performances by local youths, children’s activities, more than 70 community organizations sharing information about services they provide and free food tickets for the first 750 attendees.
United Way officials say they are still seeking about 50 volunteers after receiving a slower-than-usual response to this year’s recruitment effort.
The greatest need is for volunteers during the 4-6 p.m., 6-8 p.m. and 8-10 p.m. shifts. Volunteers will assist with event operations, distribute materials, help guests navigate the event and clean up the park after the celebration concludes.
Organizers say volunteer opportunities are available for individuals and groups, with a variety of roles ranging from physically demanding setup and teardown work to greeting attendees and providing information.
Additional details about the event schedule, activities and participating organizations are expected to be released before the event.
