ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Plans for a Costco Wholesale in the Enka/Candler area will face city review later than originally scheduled after the applicant requested a delay.

The proposal, which calls for a 160,940-square-foot Costco development, including a 32-pump fueling station and a tire center, was initially scheduled for the Technical Review Committee meeting on Oct. 6. The discussion has now been moved to Nov. 3.

The project planned for roughly 25 acres at 264 and 274 Enka Heritage Parkway would also extend the parkway and request technical modifications to the Unified Development Ordinance, including allowances for extra parking.

A neighborhood meeting was held Aug. 21 at the Enka-Candler Public Library. About two dozen residents attended, with many expressing support for the jobs and development the project could bring. Some voiced concerns about potential traffic at the Sand Hill Road and Lake Drive intersection. City planners said any required traffic improvements would be addressed through the formal review process.

Representatives from Costco and affiliated consultants emphasized the project is still in the early entitlement stage. City staff approval, Planning Commission review and City Council consideration will all be required before construction could begin.
