ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Two juveniles were arrested Tuesday after a loaded handgun and ammunition were found on the campus of T.C. Roberson High School, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said they received information around 9 a.m. that prompted an investigation. Deputies found a 17-year-old student in possession of a loaded handgun and a 14-year-old student with ammunition.

The discovery led to a large law enforcement presence at the school, but officials said all students and staff remained safe and classes continued as normal. Investigators said there was no ongoing threat once the weapon and ammunition were secured.

Sheriff Quentin Miller said authorities are still working to determine a motive.

“We want all of our parents, students, teachers and staff to know that everyone in the area is safe,” Miller said in a statement. “We know that seeing our deputies respond to any activity near our schools can be alarming and raise questions. We appreciate the partnership we have with Buncombe County Schools and its leadership.”

No additional details about potential charges were immediately released.
