UNC Asheville closed out its first weekend of the 2019 season with a 5-2 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.

“It always good to see (Lenoir-Rhyne head coach) Tom Rees again, who is a former Bulldog men’s tennis player and is doing a tremendous job with his Lenoir-Rhyne team,” UNC Asheville men’s tennis head coach Tom Hand said. “They came out and jumped on us in doubles and that’s a part we need to do some work on, but they played some great doubles and took the point from us. That put us under a little bit of pressure, but I felt good about how our guys competed in singles. It was a tough match and we have to build from here.”

The match as noted started with Lenoir-Rhyne taking the doubles point. The Bulldogs did pick up the win at No. 2 doubles though with the duo of Edward Colclough and Oli Nolan winning their eighth straight match together dating back to last season. Colclough and Nolan downed Mauricio Hernandez and Josh Lazenby, 7-6.

UNC Asheville (2-0) from there picked up wins in five of the six singles flights to collect the 5-2 win.

The undefeated Bulldogs will next face off against George Mason (11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2) and East Carolina (12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3) in Greenville, N.C.
