UNC Asheville dropped its first match of the 2019 spring season in a 6-1 loss to Davidson on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
“It was a tough match today,” UNC Asheville women’s tennis head coach Lise Gregory said. “Davidson is a good team and they were just a little bit better than us today. I’m really happy with our freshman Lize Alet Morkel, who is playing at No. 1 for us and went undefeated this weekend against pretty good competition. We’re still sort of playing a little bit of catch up and trying to get healthy and match fit, but we’re okay if we keep going in the direction that we are going.”
The match opened with UNC Asheville (1-1) narrowly dropping the doubles point to Davidson (2-0).
At No. 3 doubles, the Bulldog duo of Lize Alet Morkel and Taylor Love improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-2 victory over Davidson’s Alyssa Hahn and Gabrielle Centenari.
Davidson took the win at No. 1 doubles, but No. 2 doubles came down to the wire with the Bulldog duo of Emily Sidor and Christin Louw narrowly falling 7-6 to Samantha Armas and Alexandra Abele to allow the Wildcats to earn the doubles point in the match.
UNC Asheville secured its lone win of the day at No. 1 singles with Morkel collecting a 6-4, 7-6 win over Megan Scholvinck.
Morkel is now 2-0 in singles on the young 2019 season.
UNC Asheville will next welcome North Greenville to the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
