Bulldogs Win Third Straight Contest in 60-46 Victory Over the Terriers

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – For its third straight victory, the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team downed Wofford on Sunday, 60-46, to remain undefeated inside Kimmel Arena for the 2018-19 season (3-0).

Game Highlights

UNC Asheville opened the contest quickly on a 5-0 run. Junior Zip Scott made the game’s first basket, and senior Jessica Wall tallied a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs the early lead. The two clubs played even for the rest of the first quarter, as both squads tallied 10 points each in the final minutes.

In the second quarter, the two teams continued to play even, as both clubs tallied 12 points each. Freshman center Evonna McGill scored two points and grabbed three rebounds, and Wall drilled a three-pointer to pace Asheville in the stanza.

At the halftime break, UNC Asheville led by five points, 27-22. The Bulldogs shot 48 percent from the field (12-for-25). Brooke Jordan-Brown was efficient from the hardwood, as the junior went 3-for-4 en route to scoring six points. Wall also had three points, as the senior made a pair of three-pointers.

The Bulldogs came out firing in the second half, as they outscored the Terriers by 10 points (19-9). Leading the surge in the third quarter for the Bulldogs was Sonora Dengokl and Nadiria Evans. Both players tallied six points each, and both Bulldogs also tallied three made field goals apiece. Ali Trani also contributed three points on a made three-pointer.

UNC Asheville put the game in cruise control in the fourth quarter, as it sealed the 14-point victory. Dengokl was unstoppable in the final stanza, as the Sumter, S.C. native tallied eight of Asheville’s 14 points. Scott, Trani and Evans all scored two points in the final quarter.

Dengokl led the Bulldog offense for the fourth time this season, as the senior totaled 16 points. Surprisingly, 14 of those points came in the final 20 minutes of play. She went an impressive 7-for-11 from the hardwood and also grabbed five rebounds. She also tallied two assists.

Evans also collected another double-digit performance, as she finished with 10 points. It was the sophomore’s third straight double-digit contest. The Gainesville, Fla. native also totaled a game-high three steals.

Jordan-Brown had another impressive game, as the junior went 4-for-5 from the field. She finished the game with eight points, four boards and a block.

Scott and Trani added seven points each. Scott had a game-high seven boards, including six on the defensive glass.

Wofford’s leading scorer on the season, Chloe Wanink (20.7 points per game), was limited to just four points. She only made two field goals on eight attempts.

Jackie Carman was the Terrier’s leading scorer versus the Bulldogs, as she totaled 16 points. She also corralled three rebounds and went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

With its third straight win, UNC Asheville moves to 3-2 on the year, while Wofford drops to 3-4.

UNC Asheville will conclude the month of November by traveling to Furman on Friday, Nov. 30. The contest will tip off at 7 p.m. in Timmons Arena and will be available locally on our sister station, Rewind 100.3, and on the Rewind online stream.
