UNC Asheville Volleyball Travels to Winthrop, Gardner-Webb This Weekend

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball will next travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

One day later the Bulldogs will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C. for the second “Battle of the Bulldogs” match of the season against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Zyburt Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week
UNC Asheville volleyball senior standout Madisen Zyburt was chosen as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018. The honor was the second of the season for Zyburt, who was also selected as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17.

Zyburt closed out UNC Asheville’s two wins last weekend averaging 3.88 digs per set. She finished with 31 digs in total on the week.

In UNC Asheville’s three-set home win over Charleston Southern, Zyburt ended her efforts with 15 digs on Friday, Oct. 19. She followed that up with 16 digs in UNC Asheville’s thrilling five-set home win over Presbyterian College on Saturday, Oct. 20.

Zyburt surpassed 1,000 digs as a Bulldog in the Friday win over Charleston Southern. The Plainfield, Ill. native now has 1,017 digs in her three seasons in the UNC Asheville program. Including her freshman season at Carson-Newman, Zyburt now has 1,163 digs in her career.

Bulldogs in the Big South Statistics Overall
Cara Guthrie is presently third in the Big South in kills per set at 3.27. She is also fourth in the league in points per set at 3.78. Guthrie is seventh in aces per set at 0.36. Madisen Zyburt is third in the league in digs per set at 4.88. UNC Asheville’s Cecilia Stack is seventh in the league in blocks per set at 0.85.

Madisen Zyburt is currently second in the league in Big South Conference matches with 5.15 digs per set.

UNC Asheville picked up a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 28-26) Big South victory over Gardner-Webb on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Justice Center. Gardner-Webb begins the upcoming weekend with a record of 7-15 overall and 1-8 in league play. Four Gardner-Webb players have over 100 kills this season with Kylee Garrison leading the way with 2.42 kills per set.

About Winthrop
In the first meeting of the season between the two, Winthrop picked up a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 14-25, 25-19) Big South victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Justice Center. The win was Winthrop’s first at the Justice Center since 2015. The Eagles are currently 11-11 overall and 7-3 in league play. Winthrop is led by Siania Yamaguchi’s league-leading 10.25 assists per set.
