ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville athletics department announced that Phil Marcello has been hired as the Director of Athletic Communications.
“I am very excited to be a part of the UNC Asheville team,” Marcello said. “I want to thank Janet Cone, the administration, and the coaches for welcoming me. I look forward to working with our staff to help tell the stories of our great student-athletes. Go Bulldogs!”
Marcello joins Asheville after serving as the Assistant Director of Media Relations at Wofford College for just over two years. At Wofford, Marcello was the primary contact for men’s basketball, volleyball, lacrosse and golf.
“We are very excited to hire Phil to lead our athletics communications team,” stated Janet R. Cone. “Not only does he come highly recommended by his colleagues, he has the media relations skills, work ethic, and experiences to be a very successful member of the Bulldog Team. Please help us welcome Phil to the UNC Asheville.”
In his first year at Wofford, Marcello directed the media and communication efforts of a men’s basketball team that finished 19th in the Associated Press Top 25, going undefeated in Southern Conference play and earning the program’s first NCAA Tournament win. During the 2018-19 season, Marcello promoted and coordinated the media requests for the 2019 Lou Henson Player of the Year, Fletcher Magee, and Sporting News’ National Coach of the Year, Mike Young.
Prior to his time at Wofford, Marcello worked as a media relations assistant for the Southern Conference, serving as the primary contact and championship media coordinator for seven sports while overseeing the FCS Coaches Poll.
Graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in mass communications, Marcello spent two years at Millersville University as a graduate assistant for sports information while earning a master’s degree in sports management. During his tenure at Millersville, he was the primary contact for 11 sports and served as the school’s play-by-play announcer for all major sports.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Marcello played two years of collegiate soccer at Randolph-Macon College.
