UNC Asheville men’s tennis picked up an impressive 4-3 non-conference road win over East Carolina at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019.

“It was a great win for the team today,” UNC Asheville men’s tennis head coach Tom Handsaid. “We played a much better doubles point today, which is always a huge help. Charlie Morkel came up with a big win for us with the third set clincher at No. 3 singles.”

UNC Asheville secured wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to make sure and earn the doubles point. The nationally second-ranked pairing Oli Nolan and Henry Patten bested East Carolina’s top doubles paring of Ronny Georgi and Diogo Marques, 6-4, to win at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 doubles, Sirawit Daosaengsawang and Olly Cull downed Vlad Anghel and Wisse Jonker, 6-3.

In singles, Patten picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Marques at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Nolan collected a 6-2, 6-4 win over Anghel.

Morkel made sure the Bulldogs left East Carolina (5-1) still undefeated on the year at 4-0 with a thrilling 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Jonker at No. 3 singles.

UNC Asheville men’s tennis will return home next to face Tusculum at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. The Bulldogs a few days later will host UTC at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10.
