UNC Asheville volleyball standouts Julia Borges and Cara Guthrie have been tabbed first-team All-State by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA).
The 2018 University Division All-State Volleyball Teams were released on Tuesday, Dec. 4. A total of 14 student-athletes from six different North Carolina schools were named to the first and second teams.
Nominations were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by NCCSIA members.
Guthrie put together one of the best careers in the history of UNC Asheville volleyball.
The senior outside hitter joined the ultra-exclusive club of those with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in UNC Asheville’s road win at Radford to close out the regular season. Guthrie finished her impressive career with 1,262 kills and 1,025 digs. Guthrie with over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs became just the 46th player in Big South Conference history to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
Guthrie also ended her career with 138 aces, meaning that with her over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs she became just the 35th in league history with over 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 100 aces.
The Jupiter, Fla. native closed out her career as a three-time All-Big South selection. In addition to first-team all-league honors the last two seasons, she also was an Honorable Mention selection in the 2016 season.
A junior right side from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Borges closed out her first season in a Bulldog uniform averaging 2.34 kills per set. Borges collected four double-doubles during the 2018 season.
Borges finished the season with 11 double-digit kill performances. She had a season-best 17 kills and 16 digs in UNC Asheville’s thrilling Big South Tournament quarterfinal win over USC Upstate at the Justice Center on Friday, Nov. 16.
