CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 that UNC Asheville women’s soccer defender Kyra Kandel was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.

The Cary, N.C. native played hero for the Bulldogs in the lone game of the week. Kandel tallied the game-winning goal over Hampton in the 107th minute. The golden goal was the senior’s first-ever game-winning goal in her four-year tenure.

Primarily as the left back, Kandel totaled 107 minutes of action and helped limit Hampton to just five shots (one on goal). The win was the Bulldogs’ second shutout of the year. The last time UNC Asheville shut out an opponent was a 0-0 tie with VMI on Sept. 7.

Kandel currently has two goals this year, which is a single-season high for the senior. Prior to today’s game, she had 1,077 minutes of action this year, which is also a single-season career high.

Kandel and the UNC Asheville women’s soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17, as the Bulldogs travel to USC Upstate. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
