Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina junior outside hitter Abigail Veit has been named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office for her performance in matches from Oct. 2-7.

The weekly honor is the first for a Catamount this season and first for Veit in her career. It is the first weekly award for Western Carolina since Meagan Sanchez was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12, 2016.

In a pair of 3-1 home wins over Furman and Wofford last weekend, Veit finished with 27 kills, a team-best 37 digs and two block assists, averaging 3.38 kills and 4.62 digs per set. On Friday, Veit recorded her second double-double of 2018 with 11 kills and 16 digs. During Saturday’s win over Wofford, Veit set a new career-high with 21 digs along with a season-high 16 kills, an assist and one block assist. Veit’s previous career-high was 20 digs against Samford on Sept. 29, 2017.

Veit has played in all 61 sets this season and is second on the team with 147 kills, 2.41 kills per set and fourth with 147 digs.

Chattanooga’s Jaquelyn Langhaim was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Western Carolina (9-8, 3-3 SoCon) hosts Samford (10-10, 5-1 SoCon) on Friday at 6 p.m. before welcoming Chattanooga on Saturday for a volleyball and football doubleheader against the Mocs with first serve scheduled for Noon followed by football kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
